INTRODUCTION. (BUTIR-BUTIR KEBUDAYAAN JAWA)

The Indonesia people have for ages lived a religious life; they have been living a life based on the belief in God the Almighty, Creator of the universe and all that is therein. Although He who rules the universe is invisible to man, man can believe in His nature, i,e. that the Lord is all-perfect, perfect, and good. Conscientious of his being the Lord’s creator when the time comes for him to leave this “alam madya” (the intermediate universe) for the “alam wasana” (the ultimate universe), the eternal universe.
Man will come to the ultimate and he aspires to, if during his life in the “alam madya”_in this world_he leads a life inspired by the nature of the Lord, i,e. to be “good”, in the essence of its meaning. His entire thought, aspirations and speech must be guided by the essence of virtue, his mind noble, his heart generous. To be essentially good means to be good not merely for one’s own sake but for the sake of others as well.
Whether or not man will reach his ultimate goal depends on how he makes use of the means the Lord has endowed him with, i.e. his five senses, his thought, his feeling, and his two antagonistic passions, one for virtue and the other for evil.
Man should at all times render grace to the almerciful Lord for havng made it easy for him by giving him religious precepts through the Prophet, the Apostle His messenger, and through his Holy Book.
The almerciful lord gives man His guidance to acquire a full life, in the physical as well as in the spiritual sense, in this world as well as in the world after.
The Unitary Republic of Indonesia which is based on “Pancasila”_Belief in the One Spreme God; Just and civilized Humanity ; The unity of Indonesia; Democracy which is guided by the inner wisdom in the unanimity arising out of deliberations amongst representatives; social justice for the whole of the People of Indonesia_provides guarantee for the people to live their religious life.
The state protects religious life that is practised by religious followers for the splendour of their respective religious as well as for devotion, and in accordance with the teachings of each religious.
Maxims in the javanese culture “Pituduh” (moral guidance), as “Wewaler” (Prohibitions), would make it easier for Indonesias to nurture a noble mind and a generous heart, i,e. to develop one self to be essentially good, and thus it will for him to develop a conscience necessary to lead a Pancasila_based civic and social life. Amen.
